Ghosts of the Street

Masque Theatre

25th March 2025

For March's play reading, we're delving into Ghosts of the Street by Wayne Ronné.

The evening will include a table read of the play by actors, followed by a discussion of the work. The discussion will be led by Melanie O'Connor Horn and a panel of experts. Input from the audience is most welcome!

About the play

How often do we walk past the homeless? We go on with our lives without a second thought of how they survive daily. They beg, they steal, and they survive. The Clovelly Bridge, used by Metrorail train services, covers the Silvermine River leading to the waters of Fish Hoek Beach where Cliffy, a school teacher, lives under a bridge with Naomi, an ex-prostitute and Andre, a young runaway. They are strangers that Cliffy has gotten to know over the years. Chantel, a young woman who used to live under the bridge comes to visit them one evening and home truths are revealed after she convinces a young drug addict, Johan, who is hiding from the police, to do her dirty work. They might be homeless but they also struggle with pain, betrayal and deception. The Ghosts of the Streets explores stories from the past, how they got to live under the bridge, and how they fantasise about what their future would be, could be, or should be.
